Alleghany County has its own full 18-hole disc golf course. The course carries the name of the park where it resides “Sam Brown Park Disc Golf Course”. The course originated in 2018 but construction and development were delayed due to various circumstances. The course officially opened February 12, 2022. The original layout was designed by Eric McCabe (2010 Disc Golf World Champion) out of Emporia, Kansas. The course is located behind Alleghany County High School. Hole one sets beside the outdoor basketball court. Sam Brown Park and Disc golf course are maintained by Alleghany County Parks and Recreation.
The course is located on Sam Brown Mountain. The first half of the course is heavily wooded and lies on the flatter part of the property. The back half of the course contains the teeth of the course. Holes 12-18 provide a lot of elevation change and tight lines. The course encourages a wide array of shot shapes from forehands, to backhands to overhand shots. There are also some large boulders throughout the course that will leave you with tricky putts and lies. The course features beautiful vistas over the town of Sparta and the Blue Ridge mountains.
Par for the course is set at 58. There are 4 par 4s while the rest of the holes are par 3s. As of opening there is only one set of tees for each hole. In the future there are plans to add short tees to every hole. The tee pads are rubber mats. Some of them are on raised platforms while others rest on level ground. The course features Dynamic Discs Veteran Baskets (one of the premier disc golf baskets). More info on the course such as hole lengths and a map can be found on the UDISC app.
This course is free to the public and will be open from dawn till dusk daily. This course has plenty of parking across two parking lots. This disc golf course will be closed during Professional Disc Golf Tournaments, inclement weather, and at dusk daily. The amenities of the course are continuously being upgraded.
