Tax Office

The Alleghany County Tax Office is responsible for the assessing, listing and collection of tax for all real and personal property located within the County as of January 1st annually. Alleghany is made up of approximately 16,000 parcels of land and has 1,000 business accounts and 1,580 personal property accounts.

There is a variety of various exclusion and exemptions available to those who qualify. These are religious, educational, charitable, elderly or disabled, disabled veteran and farm present use value. The requirements vary per program so please contact the Tax Office if you have any questions regarding a program you may be eligible for.

Important Dates

  • Last Countywide Revaluation: 2021
  • Last date to list personal property or improvements to real property: January 31
  • Interest accrues on delinquent tax amounts. Interest in the amount of 2% accrues on January 6th and an additional .75% accrues on the first day of each month thereafter until paid in full.
  • Current year taxes paid August 1 – 31 are eligible for a 2% discount

County Tax:
.597 per $100 of value

Residential Solid Waste Fee:
$98 per livable dwelling, manufactured home or permanently located camper

Fire District Tax:
Cherry Lane: .04 per $100 of value
Laurel Springs: .07 per $100 of value
Sparta: .03 per $100 of value
Glade Creek: .07 per $100 of value
Piney Creek: .06 per $100 of value
