Public Works

The Public Works department maintains and repairs 18 County facilities including all public buildings and the Transfer Station where citizens bring household garbage and recyclables.  Alleghany County Solid Waste stickers must be displayed for all vehicles depositing household waste.  These stickers are included in the yearly County tax bills.  If a sticker is lost, or if you need additional stickers, they can be obtained in the Alleghany County Tax Office located at 348 S Main St, Sparta.

Transfer Station Hours:
Monday 7a-5p
Tuesday 7a-5p
Wednesday 7a-5p
Thursday 10a-7p
Friday 7a-5p
Saturday 8a-12p (Residential trash only)

A reminder that we have a revised recycling program. We take perfectly good material that can be used for all kind of things. We would like for you to know we take paper cartons that food and drinks come in as well. These go directly into the commingled compactor. They need to be empty and rinsed but it’s very important to recycle them along with the other items listed. The recycling facility is located in the building adjacent to the tipping floor at the Transfer Facility aka the dump. Thank you and happy recycling.

The Public Works Department operates and maintains several large pieces of equipment including 3 loaders, a road tractor, and 4 trailers. Public Works also operates the animal shelter for stray dogs as well as servicing many of the county vehicles.
