NCDOT 10-year Transportation Plan – Public Input Requested!
The N.C. Department of Transportation is asking the public to provide input on what transportation projects they would like to see included in the N.C. Department of Transportation’s next 10-year transportation plan for 2028-2037.
With a goal of increasing safety, reducing congestion and promoting economic growth, NCDOT uses data and local input to determine which projects get funded in the 10-year plan based on a specific formula created by the Strategic Transportation Investments law. It allows NCDOT to use its funding more efficiently to enhance North Carolina’s infrastructure while supporting economic growth, job creation and a higher quality of life.
We want your input. The purpose of this communication is to invite and encourage your participation in the development of North Carolina’s transportation network. A statewide public comment period to submit project ideas and other feedback will be held between July 28 and Aug. 29, 2025. During this period, the public can provide input on project priorities in a short, interactive survey found on the 2028-2037 STIP public input site.
During the comment period, there will be open houses held at all NCDOT highway division offices. People can drop by and provide input or speak to NCDOT staff about potential projects in their communities.
Projects can be as large-scale as an interstate improvement or as small as a new turn lane or intersection improvement. Projects can be for any mode of transportation, including highways, aviation, bicycle and pedestrian, ferry, public transportation and rail. Please note that the comment period is not for maintenance-related projects such as patching potholes, resurfacing or ditches. NCDOT uses a different method to prioritize maintenance projects.
Next Steps
After all input for potential projects is collected, the list of projects will be finalized. Project scores and a draft Statewide Mobility-funded project list are expected to be released by June 2026. There will be additional opportunities for public comment regarding project priorities in Summer and Fall 2026. The 2028-2037 draft STIP will be released in late winter/early spring 2027, with adoption by the Board of Transportation in the summer.
Public feedback is very important to us – putting people first is a commonsense way to plan and design public infrastructure. Please assist us in maximizing public outreach by forwarding to your constituents, members, and/or staff. For additional information or comment, you may contact the project team through our hotline at 512-580-8850 and enter project code 4669, or via email at ncdot-stip@publicinput.com.
